ICEMAN 2009

On Saturday, five Dirt Dads joined some 4500 (!) bikers for the 20th annual Iceman Cometh Challange mountain bike race from Kalkaska to Traverse City. The weather was amazing, almost in the 60s with partly sunny skies. Here's the Dirt Dads results:

Marc 2:13:11

Brian 2:17:03

Tim 2:19:02

Bob 2:21:08

JP 2:52:53

If I (HP) am not mistaken, all above improved their times from last year with the exception of Bob who was quite sick for this year's race. JP had to take time to repair a broken chain. Great times considering the course was longer than past years at about 28.5 miles. Thanks to Brian & Joni for sharing the motor home, campsite, and food at the finish line. Laura and Harv were also there to cheer on the guys.

Three Dirt Dads venture down to Brown County

In the afternoon of Friday, October 9, 2009, Tim & JP drove down to Brown County, Indiana, south of Indianapolis, for riding the trails. Marc & Laura got down there earlier and set up the popup and the tent. It rained alot earlier that day and mud looked inevitable. You can see that mud in the cell phone photos but it did not rain during the ride. Guys, fill in the details. I understand some key words are french toast, biking, mud, foil dinners, biking, mud, campfire, good times. See the Photo Archive at the left.

Last CSGA ride for the season

Since the Cannonsburg State Game Area is closed to bikers starting September 15, a lot of people rode there on September 14. Dirt Dads included Tim, Brian, JP, Marc, & Harv.

The hunters are in the woods now. Wear bright colors and/or attach a bell (see photo) to your bike (deer do not wear bells). And since it gets dark sooner, bring lights.

Back to the Dirt

After a couple of weeks of road riding due to muddy trails, four Dirt Dads rode at Yankee Springs Recreation Area on Monday, August 31. Bob, JP, & HP met Tim at the trailhead who had already pedaled a half loop. We then rode the full 13.5 mile loop. Lots of exposed roots and rocks! Some drop-offs are getting scary. In fact, Tim endoed on the worst one near the road around Mile 11. No injuries. Ride on.

Time for a Road Ride

Last week's mud ride and the additional rain since told us to plan a road ride instead of destroying bikes and trails. Due to HP's flat tire and others getting out of work late, the ride started for most of us at JP's house in Zeeland. Six road riders is a new record for the Dirt Dads. We were JP, HP, Bob, Brian, Tim, & Marc. We headed west to the lakeshore, a little north, then returned before it got dark. The route is straight and flat. The weather, despite earlier showers, was clear, sunny, and windless. We practiced group riding, everyone taking our place at the front to cut the air and make a draft. About 35 miles (a few more for Brian and Marc parked at the Zeeland car pool lot). HP's bike computer showed a speed average of over 19 mph. Some of us stuck around for hot dogs (and dogs) at JP's. Notice how JC takes a special interest in cat owner Tim.

Marc, I have new tube for you. HP.

Dirt Dads take First Place at Pando!

The Dirt Dad team of Monkey Wrench (Tim), Multi-tool (Harv), Chain Whip (Bob), and Crank Puller (Brian) cranked out 34 loops to take first place for the second year in a row in the Veterans Catagory (35 and older) at the 16th annual 12 Hours of Pando Endurance Series mountain bike race. We beat three other 4-man teams by at least two laps. Two of those teams were sponsored by local bike shops. Official results should be available soon at http://www.funpromotions.com/. It was hot and the 4.2 mile course included a mud section, otherwise, it was a great day for a bike race. No major mechanical or rider breakdowns. Here you can see Brian passing another rider in an open area between the wooded sections. See more photos on Photo Archive link at the left.
Special thanks to the following for coming out to Pando to cheer and support: Sonya, Morgan, JP, Sue, Megan, & Amanda.

MUD!

Crank Puller, Tool Box, and Multi-tool (Brian, JP, & HP) biked the Rockford trail on Monday, August 10. Apparently, it was too soon after the weekend heavy rain. Too many wet puddles. Too much slimy mud. So we packed up the bikes in JP's "Old Blue" and drove to Cannonsburg State Game area. It was better, but not by much. Not good for the bikes or the trail. I guess we should have planned a road ride instead.

The next day I cleaned my bike and noticed the mud did a good job of hiding a flaw on my rear tire.

North Country Trail weekend

On Saturday, August 1, five Dirt Dads explored the North Country Trail starting at the Timber Creek trailhead near Balwin, Michigan. Brian "Crank Puller", Bob "Chain Whip", Tim "Monkey Wrench", Harv "Multi-Tool", and JP "Tool Box" rode north past the Freesoil trailhead. At 25 miles, we turned around to complete a total of 50+ miles. We had rain for a couple of hours but it stopped for the entire return trip. The bikes and riders got dirty. The riders got cleaned up in Little Star Lake. The bikes will get cleaned up someday.

Bob & Sonja, thanks again for use of your cottage on Putnum Lake. See more photos by clicking the Photo Archive link to the left.

Displaced Dirt Dad Diversifies Duties Decently!

The following was copied from an email from Florida Dirt Dad Eric. To see the photos you may have to copy and paste the links into your browser.

Hey guys!
I wanted to give everyone an update from Florida. Last Saturday I did my first Triathlon! It was awesome! I was in the 'My First Triathlon' category, and it was split up into age groups, unless you placed in the top 5, then you place in the overall classification for that category. I placed 5th overall, out of about 30 guys (56 with girls)!! I hadn't even trained in three weeks, and I only finished 4 minutes behind the winner in the 'My First Triathlon' group!
Here's some of the details. It was a quarter mile swim, 12.5 mile bike, and 2.65 mile run. I did it in 1:11:44. I started in the back on the swim, because I've never swam competitively, and I came out of the water around 8th-10th. Then the bike was good of course. I started picking people off, I moved up to 3rd or so. Then on the run I got passed in the first mile, and passed on the last stretch by people I think were in my category, otherwise I didn't get passed.
I really really had a lot of fun. I'll be training for another one, hopefully I have time to train this time!!

P.S. I beat all of the girls in my category

Lumberjack, Holland Hundred, & North Country Trail

Bob & Tim finished the grueling Lumberjack 100 mountain bike race in under 11 hours on June 20. Great endurance job on the Big M trail, guys! Feel free to add details.

JP & HP biked the Holland Hundred road ride on July 18. We averaged a respectable 17.3 mph. It was cool and dry but windy. Tim, I pointed out to JP the "double-flat pothole" from last year. Some of you may know Gene from Haworth on the left side of the photo. He rode with us for the wet 2008 Holland Hundred.

The North Country Trail ride near Balwin is planned for next weekend, July 31-August 2. Details later.

Marc & Laura are linked!

Dirt Dad Marc & Laura were married on May 30th at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland. The reception was at the Grand Haven Community Center Mackinaw Room. Dirt Dad (and Marc's brother-in-law) Rusty was the Master of Ceremonies. Other Dirt Dads present were Brian, Tim, Bob, Harv, & JP. Congratulations to a great couple! We hope you have an awesome honeymoon. Laura, the Dirt Dads look forward to getting to know you better.

Marc, please tell us how you and Laura liked the wedding gift. Our wives think we're all crazy. You may tell Laura it can be used as a bud vase holder, too.
See more photos at the Photo Archive link on the left.
Regarding road bike riding, Brian pedaled 70 miles and Bob cranked out 100 miles on the day of the wedding. Inspired, JP, Harv, & Tim pedaled 50 miles the next day, a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

North Caroliney 2009!!!!!!!!!!

JP, Brian, Bob, Mark, Eric and Tim embarked on the NC2009 trip. Eric drove up from gatorland… After Arriving at Pisgah NF, NC and setting up camp we blasted down many trails, and crawled up many more. Some trails offered more pain, blood, and bruises than others!

The traditional Claw Hammer climb of death, then Avery Creek with a flowing but rocky downhill. The classic Caney Bottoms and Pink Beds. Daniel Ridge with breathtaking waterfalls at the bottom.

While in Dupont State Forest we explored some new territory and a little old. The Ridgeline trail was da bomb by far!!! None of us could get enough of the Ridgeline with a super fast flowy singletrack downhill.

Squirrel Gap was a crazy technical uphill grind along the ridge all the way up (which never ended). The downhill bought Brian a trip to ER for stitches and bought JP a new helmet. We did not miss Black Mountain either!!

Lots of food, and lots of food…

Vacation in Gatlinburg

Here's a few pictures from our trip to Gatlinburg in March. We had great weather it was sunny and 70 degrees almost the whole week. I went golfing twice with Joni's dad. That was enough to remind me that I like cycling much better than golf. I went for two road rides. It was good training for riding clawhammer, everything is either up or down .We also drove over to North Carolina for a day. We drove through the campground and went to the fish hatchery, checked out a few waterfalls then we ate at the world famous "El Chalupa". We took a scenic ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway on the way home. That would be a great road too ride road bikes on . Well North Carolina is only two weeks away, Can't wait to get down there and ride.

First Race as Dirt Dads, 2003

I was doing some cleaning out of my basement and came across some photos of biking from years ago, including this one from the 12 hours of Pando, year 2003! It was the first race as a team named "Dirt Dads" and featured Marc, Rusty, Harv, and JP. I remember the day as very hot & humid.
I scanned and uploaded the photos on a new album called 'Pando 2003' and added others to 'Iceman 2008' and 'Misc'. Look for them at the Photo link to the left.
